Has to be one of the worst calls I have seen in a very long while
Seriously though… This ranks up with one of the absolute worst calls I have ever seen. Like what was Tim Welke really thinking. I understand the old “neighborhood call”- help the guy out if there is a close play and you’re trying to avoid injury (and that usually takes place at second base), this however is a complete outrage. Now I understand it’s one out, I shouldn’t make a big deal out of this play, but c’mon Tim, That is awful. His paid responsibility is to position himself at 1st base, not anywhere else. It’s not like in College or HS where there are only 2-3 umpires, his assignment is to watch plays at first. I understand umpiring is hard, and for the most part they do an exceptional job, but really, have some pride. The only thing I can think of is that he must be really good friends with Jim Joyce and Jerry Meals.
