Thursday night marked the official Kickoff of the 2008 college football season and with that brought the excitement of the first Saturday where teams get to start with a clean slate and try to make their way to the college elite. I for one am extremely excited for this season, but in watching today I couldn’t help but notice that college football is finally starting to even out. This dates all the way back to the early 1990’s when the NCAA started cutting the amount of football scholarships that each team was able to give out, since then the number has been reduced from 95 to 85. Now why would something like this that happened 15-16 years only start being more and more visible now? The answer is simple, it is because in cutting back the amount of scholarships that schools were allowed to give out it gave smaller schools a chance to start establishing themselves by being able to sign young player that would have originally gone to big name schools but since there were no more scholarships available than they had to look else where.

Now it is really starting to show as teams like East Carolina and Bowling Green Universities are stating to put themselves on the map in the college football world and today both teams took big steps towards establishing themselves as top competitors in todays league. Both teams played early on Saturday and both teams upset pre-season top 25 teams. East Carolina met Virginia Tech today and they showed up ready to play. Right from the get go ECU’s offense and defense played with explosion as they picked off Virginia Tech’s Sean Glennon for 2 early INT’s. They went on to win the game 27-22 after scoring on a blocked punt with 1:52 left on the game clock. Bowling Green upset the college football world by defeating number 25 Pittsburgh 27-17. These two teams are just two examples so far of how colleges top teams may be headed for more and more of a challenge as the years go on and how the chances of teams blowing through a season undefeated may be getting smaller and smaller.

This Week on Bleeping Idiots we have a special treat for everyone as we sit down with Virginia Tech Hokies Redshirt Junior Running Back Jahre Cheeseman.

1. BleepingIdiots.com: First off tell us a bit about your injury, and the rehab process behind it. Do you feel you will be able to be back 100% and compete for the bulk of the carries this season?

Jahre Cheeseman: I broke my left fibula during a scrimmage in the spring. I been doin a lot of balance and flexibility exercise along with lifting. The agility came later this summer but are also going well. I think I will be ready for the season but i expect that we will have a two-back system once again at VT. Kenny Lewis is now clear to go and we are workin together to compliment each other.

2. BleepingIdiots.com: On November 1st last year against Georgia Tech, you showed the coaching staff as well as the whole nation what you are capable of with the ball in your hands when you broke off that 70 yard run. Do you feel that the GT game gave you stronger pull for more carries this upcoming season?

Jahre Cheeseman: I think it changed a couple of minds and opened some eyes. However I believe the spring determined alot of what kind of pt i will get this fall.

3. BleepingIdiots.com: Coming out High School, you were the #9 all purpose back in the nation. What was the toughest part of the transition from high school ball to the college game.

Jahre Cheeseman: I think the hardest transition was the mental aspect, and getting more involved in film and my reads on the field.

4. BleepingIdiots.com: Many scouts still consider you to be a running back / cornerback… where do you prefer to play and where are you most comfortable?

Jahre Cheeseman: I’d much rather play tailback. I feel more comfortable and able to produce more for the team at the running back spot, it is more natural to me.

5. BleepingIdiots.com: Which NFL running back do you compare most favorably to, and who do you feel you model your running style after?

Jahre Cheeseman: I dont really compare my running style to anyone, I kind of just do what comes natural on the field.

6. BleepingIdiots.com: What is your opinion on the Dual QB system with Tyrod and Sean? Do you think it has a negative, positive, or no effect on team chemistry?

Jahre Cheeseman: I really like the duel system that we have I think it brings out the best in each of them. Also I feel that it is great for the team and widely accepted

7. BleepingIdiots.com: You and Tyrod Taylor line up on the goal line, who gets to the 40 yardline first?

Jahre Cheeseman: I couldn’t even say, In my current status I would say easily he would take me. But prior to the injury I think it would be a good race.

8. BleepingIdiots.com: Every kid’s dream is to play as themselves in a video game. This Wednesday NCAA 09 comes out, any rating predictions for yourself?

Jahre Cheeseman: I didnt have any predictions for myself on the game I’m just curious to see what happens. I still have yet to pick it up. I’m just happy to even be in the game.

A new weekly story I will be blogging every week is Bleeping Idiot of the Week, choosing the one person each week I feel that just not up-to-par in the sports world.

This week’s Bleeping Idiot is Marcus Vick, no not Michael Vick, his younger delinquent brother and the other former Virginia Tech Quarterback who has had a few run-ins with the law and problems in life. Marcus also had a temporary career with the Miami Dolphins in 2007. Police reports say a bicycle patrol officer(aka Lance Armstrong cop) saw Vick and a female involved in an altercation in a car around 2 a.m. The officer confronted them and offered assistance, then asked Vick for his driver’s license. Police say Vick then sped away, but was stopped minutes later. Vick was charged with DUI, misdemeanor avoiding police, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, and driving a suspended license. C’mon, call a cab next time with some of that dog betting money and save yourself from another headline on every major sports network.

This kid has to get his life together, I don’t understand why he is not doing what he’s best at(besides getting in trouble) playing football. It makes me wonder why guy’s like him aren’t playing in Canada or in the Arena league. Do they think they are to good for it? Or is he just having to much fun driving around drunk at 2 a.m. Below is a timeline with Marcus’s troubles on and off the field at VT, he also was charged with waving a gun at 3 teenagers in a McDonald’s parking lot during an altercation.

The first thing I thought when I read about this incident, is that I feel terrible for his mother Ms. Vick. Her two children had all the potential in the world to succeed in life, a great education and they were two of the best athletes in the nation. I guess they just grew up with the wrong crowd and got involved with the wrong types of people. I completely understand that they are human’s too, and everyone makes mistakes, but there has to be a point where he realizes its time to grow up…

Marcus get your life together…

Timeline of Trouble Marcus Vick’s on- and off-field problems since he enrolled at Virginia Tech in 2002:

Oct. 1, 2005
